Ricki Hall #100Beards

The hardest task when completing the #100Beards project wasn't finding the bearded men, it was selecting which photos would end up on the blog. Often I'd take 15 or 20 shots for each day, which I would painstakingly go through to find one which would end up online. Luckily when making the 100 Beards book I was able to add in some of my favourite alternatives, but was still restricted to two per subject. When photographing Ricki Hall, who marked the halfway point of the project, there were so many great shots I thought it only fair to share the best here.

Check out the photo of Ricki that made it onto Day 50 of the #100Beards blog here.

A Day with Sophia

Photobucket

I've never really been one to coo over babies. Maybe it's because I'm a man, maybe I've just not got a huge paternal instinct. When my sister was expecting her first child last year, I was excited but couldn't really comprehend how I'd feel once the baby was born. As soon as I met my beautiful niece Sophia, all that changed.

Last week, I spent my first full day flying solo and although I was thrilled (and surprised) to be trusted with a one year old, I was also slightly nervous. Anything. Could. Happen. Luckily, lots of things did happen and all of them were fun. And that's the thing. Sophia is simply so much fun. I'd be sitting for 2 minutes and she's toddle over with a book in hand, plonk herself beside me and want me to read her a story. At snack time, it was one for me, one for her, as she wanted to share every morsel with me. However, the best part about time with Sophia is peek-a-boo. She has taught me that anything can act as an object to hide behind: from the obvious (sofas, doors) to the obscure (books, remote controls, packets of raisins).

It's important to keep a camera in hand at all times when with the little one and the best snap from our day together came as part of her new favourite game. Picture this: Sophia decides she wants to play with her pop-up green tube. Now that she's mastered the art of un-doing velcro, it's a go-to toy. I turn around for 30 seconds, turn back and it's expanded across the floor with a little bum and legs sticking out one side. Naturally, I'm curious to see the view from inside the tube and who do I find? A little girl, ready to play peek-a-boo.

100 Beards Book launch at Jigsaw Menswear

On Friday night I launched the 100 beards book and exhibition at one of my favourite British stores, Jigsaw Menswear in Spitalfields. The event was packed with some of London's finest and I want to say a genuine thank you to everyone who made it down. Having lived in the big smoke for less than a year, it feels very touching to have a room filled with new friends and some spectacular beards.

The exhibition will run until December 7th at 'Jigsaw Menswear' 11 Lamb Street, Spitalfields.

City Traveller

Photobucket

I'm a simple kind of guy and when traveling I always attempt to pack light. After the recent trip back up to Scotland, I photographed it's contents filled with my favourite finds from the past few months.

Hershel Bag: The most sturdy backpack I own. Full stop.

Pretty Broken Punks Book: The best book I've read in years is a coming of age story of a New Yorker running one of the cities most notorious nightclubs. A true story. First editions currently on sale here.

RHA Headphones: Made in Glasgow with superb focus on quality. Not too large to way down my head and small enough to slip in my bag. Find the SA950i model here.

Ruffians Facial Scrub: My favourite Scottish barber now has a range of products to keep me going between visits.

Maison Martin Margiela Untitled: H&M may have stolen the brands sparkle, but MMM still has my favourite fragrance 'Untitled'.

Burton Wode Boxers: Albert Einstein printed cotton boxers. Enough said. Get them here.

Scotch & Soda Cardigan: With the cold becoming unbearable, a warm cardigan is more than necessary. I got mine from London's coolest personalised clothing service Smithfield Case. You tell them what you're looking for, they deliver you a package filled with goodies and you pay for what you keep. Personal shopping made easy.

French Connection Jeans: I rarely wear jeans so there's usually only one pair that keeps me going for a while. After my last indigo wash got holey and battered, it was time for a new pair. Much searching ensued and the only one's to come close were French Connection. Great fit, wash and fabric. My favourite pair of jeans is alive - get them here.

100 Beards Exhibition: Ruffians, Edinburgh

This week I traveled back to my homeland to launch the 100 Beards, 100 Days exhibition in Scotland. As much as I would have loved to show in my first love, Glasgow, the pull of Ruffians Barbershop was too great. Most certainly the best barbers north of the border, they were the only logical choice when looking for a venue to host an exhibition documenting fantastic facial hair.

Last night was the big party, and what a night it was. Huge thank you to everyone who came out in the dark, cold and wet night to share a drink. Whether you are a member of the press, a follower on Twitter, a reader of the 100 Beards blog or a Ruffians customer it was wonderful to catch up with you all.

If you weren't able to make it along, the exhibition will up and open to the public until the end of the year with a limited number of signed copies of the 100 Beards book available to buy in store for £20. Ruffians is located at 23 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh.

Big thank yous got to the team at Ruffians Barbers and photography the brilliant Andrew R Moore.

The 100 Beards Book: On the Bookshelf

It's been such a whirlwind few weeks of photographing beards, curating exhibitions and making books, that when I finally got the finished product - a limited edition hardback photography book - I didn't even document it.

Less than 2 weeks after it officially launched and the 250 first editions have nearly sold out already! I'm overwhelmed and very grateful for the support. I finally grabbed 5 minutes to photograph the books ready to be shipped and upload the photos for the world to see. Even more magnificent when seen in repetition, if I do say so myself.

If you want to get your hands on a signed copy before they're all out, go to 100beards.bigcartel.com.

Pall Mall Barbers: Authentic British Barber

Photobucket

Since the start of the 100 Beards project, Pall Mall Barbers has been an incredible support. As one of London's oldest barber shops, I was honoured that such a respected establishment would get involved in a digitally-led creative project. Not only are the team forward-thinking, they're also darn good at what they do.

I couldn't resist but take photos of their oldest store, established in 1896, located on a discrete side street off Pall Mall. With wooden lined walls, ceramic sinks and traditional fixtures, it's everything you want from an authentic London barbershop.

Pall Mall Barbers is located at the north-west end of Trafalgar Square at 27 Whitcomb Street.

45 St Martins Lane

 Photobucket

45 St Martins Lane. St Martins Lane Hotel. Front Room.

This address will never have the same connotation for me as this week, I showed my first solo exhibition in London for the 100 Beards, 100 Days project.

I couldn't be more proud of the work or more overwhelmed by the support I've received so far. After my press launch last week, I got a whole host of incredible coverage (which you can see on my Facebook Fanpage) which I'm so grateful for. What's even more special, is the number of people who went out of their way to come by and say hello, pick up a book and have a look at the exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who came along and of course to St Martins Lane Hotel for the space.

Watch this space as a new 100 Beards launch is only a few weeks away...in the meantime, here are some shots from the launch at St Martins Lane Hotel.

100 Beards, 100 Days: The Book!

With so much support and love for the 100 Beards, 100 Days project, I thought it only right to produce it in printed form. I'm pleased, nervous and excited to announce that after approximately 1237 hours of hard work, the 100 Beards book will be available from November!

The book itself, with only 250 hand signed 1st editions printed, contains over 120 photographs of bearded men. Of course the subjects who made up day 1 to 100 are inside, along with outtakes (it was very hard to pick just one photo daily) and other men who didn't quite make it on the blog.

By buying this book, not only are you getting a beautiful hardback limited edition publication, but you're also helping a new artist to continue his work. Doing the 100 Beard project has been as challenging as it has been rewarding, and I hope that this documentation of London beards in the Summer of 2012 will inspire others to attempt facial hair growth.

A big thank you to the incredible Pall Mall Barbers, who have supported the launch of the book from it's inception, and most importantly, all the men who agreed to be photographed!

You can preorder the book online here at 100beards.bigcartel.com - if you're having problems with shipping to your country, please send an email to 100beards@gmail.com and we'll get it sorted!

A Presant from Paul

You can always guarantee a friend to pick you up when you least expect it.

After weeks of hard slogging on the 100 Beards project, things are finally coming to fruition with a limited edition book and gallery launching soon (details to follow!). With little sleep and lots of coffee, this morning I received a surprise package from my talented friend, Berlin based tailor Paul Davis. Just what I needed to get me through another very busy week.

On the Street: Faces at Frieze

My entire weekend has been spent wondering around Regent's Park to photograph style for a client at Frieze London 2012. It's fascinating to see the variety of people it attracts, but more than any other group, the super-rich elite were in full force. Pulling up in vintage Porches and flash Jaguars (I even saw a stretch Limousine), they came dressed in furs, sunglasses, three-piece suits and sparkly jewels.

Since beginning the 100 Beard project, I've become more fascinated with faces than ever before. The way a portrait tells a story is just as interesting as the clothing people choose to show the world. I spotted many great faces at Frieze this year - here are a few of my favourite.
