London is full of old school barbershops with curiosity cabinets filled with little glass bottles of beard oil and rows of hanging metal razorblades. It's the sort of thing I always thought would do really well in Glasgow but never seemed to emerge. Sure, there are cool hairdressers, but a place for men purely to chew the fat and get preened is missing.
Last month, Edinburgh pipped Glasgow to the punch in the opening of Ruffians on Queensferry Road. On opening, I saw an interview with founder Andrew Cannon and decided he & his team were up to the job of cleaning me up for the Scottish Fashion Awards. I wasn't wrong. Ian and Laura made me feel like a million bucks, talking me through each stage of the process, from wet shave & moisturise to scalp massage & cut. Using their own specially developed line of products, I left with just enough confidence to tackle an arena filled with 2500 people. Not only is the service top notch, but the salon design is beautifully considered and left me with a feeling that the quality site had been around for decades rather than days.
