1 Book Launch, 100 Beards, 1 Night

 photo 100Beardsevent2s.jpg

On Wednesday night I hosted a book launch at Red Bull Studios for the new photobook '100 Beards'. The title may be slightly misleading (it actually is home to 200 beard portraits - all the men featured since the project began) but that didn't stop nearly 300 folk coming along to the event. As well as signing the book, I multitasked with an exhibition & live photoshoot, capturing all the bearded men who came along. Although I missed a large portion of the room due to sheer numbers and lack of time, I managed to capture quite a few - see the results above.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, it was an honour to have gents travel from all across the UK: Cardiff, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester and even St Andrews for the event - what a turnout! I chatted to so many interesting people and the support was overwhelming. I know the space got so full at some points that people were turned away at the door - I'm sorry if you didn't make it in or weren't able make it across the room to say hello - it was so packed and I truly appreciate your attendance.

To those who couldn't get a copy of the book, you can order online at 100beards.bigcartel.com. The book has been printed in limited numbers and is already selling out fast so better be quick to avoid disappointment.

The exhibition will be at Red Bull Studios, 155 Tooley Street London until January 17th, so do pop along and let me know your thoughts.

100 Beards Book Launch TONIGHT: Red Bull Studios, London Bridge

There are so many incredible bearded blokes in London. So many in fact, that it's impossible to photograph them all. Not a week passes by where I don't get a Tweet or email from one asking if I will photograph them for 100 Beards.

Due to the sheer number of requests, when it came to planning my new book launch I thought 'why not set up a studio in the gallery? I can photograph all the fantastic beards who come by and have a whole new set of portraits of beard-wearing beard-admirers.' So on Wednesday 18th December I'm doing exactly that!

Tonight I'll be hosting the new 100 Beards book launch at Red Bull Studios on Tooley Street, where you can come to get your copy signed just in time for Christmas, get a free drink, see the new work exhibited and get your portrait taken!

I'll be in the space from 4pm and we'll start the proper celebrations by around 7pm. The gallery is open to all so feel free to invite your friends along - sharing this link on Facebook.

Event: '100 Beards' Book Launch
Location: Red Bull Studios, 155-171, Tooley St, London SE1 2JB
Time: 4pm - 10pm

100 Beards Book: Edition Two

 photo COVER100BCOVER1HR.jpg

It's been a long road since my first bearded photograph on July 1st 2012. Since that fateful day the 100 Beards project grew into something far greater than I could have ever imagined. I met guys who are now best mates, got support from people like Nick Wooster and Bruce Pask, and seriously considered setting up a dating agency due to the huge volume of tweets asking for guys' numbers.

I'm now well beyond the 100 days I initially set out to accomplish and have reached 200 portraits. This week marks the launch of my second book - a sumptuous colour photobook filled with over 250 pages. This edition included quotes from many of the men I met on the journey. A huge part of the experience was talking to each guy about their bearded experiences and I found it to be both amusing and inspiring to hear their anecdotes.

I'm more in love with this book than I was the first - I loved the concise and precise first edition but knew it was only for a select few to launch the London exhibition. This new book is international, it's grown with the project and has been re-edited and re-designed to fit what my original intention was - capturing a time and place in the world where bearded began to rule (again).

The new book is £25 and can be bought at 100Beards.bigcartel.com. I truly appreciate all the support and encouragement from readers and fans of the work - if you know a beard admirer, please do pass on the link and share it with your friends. Fly the beard banner!

The Mr Porter Paperback at Smythson, New Bond Street

The second Mr Porter Paperback has just launched and to celebrate the menswear retailer collaborated with British luxury leather goods company Smythson by creating a line of 500 limited edition leather bound books.

I was asked to photograph the event at the Smythson store on New Bond Street, which was jam-packed with London's most interesting menswear enthusiasts.

Sartorial vs Street #AdidasOriginals

 photo sartorialvsstreetadidas2.jpg

To me Adidas Originals conjours images of urban life, 1970s street culture, the birth of Hip Hop and the mean streets of New York City. As the German company only introduced this 'Originals' name recently, it may be completed fabricated in my mind, but there's certainly a street-cool that comes embedded in that simple pointy logo.

Pushing further into the realm of street culture, Adidas Originals' new Blue Series focuses on lifestyle heritage and wearable items that can be scaled up. This week I stopped by Adidas HQ in Covent Garden to select items for a 'Sartorial vs Street' photoshoot, looking at the versatility of the items. There are a few standout pieces to me but the waterproof navy peacoat is a particular favourite. Take a look at how we styled each look and let me know what you prefer - Sartorial or Street?

STREET: Peacoat, Adidas Originals; Tshirt, Adidas Originals; Hat, COS; Ripped Jeans, Vintage; Trainers, Adidas Originals.

Instagram x Printed.com

 photo polaroidIMG_2698s.jpg

Ever since I bought my first Polaroid 600 I've loved instant film. There's something irreplaceablly magical about holding an image in your hands that you've just taken. So last week when the Sartorial7 lads and I had our photoshoot at the Oliver Sweeney HQ, I was more than impressed with their wall of Polaroid photos, even more so after being told it was in fact a new service of printable Instagram images. Days later and I've got a set of my own - Printed.com even gave me a 20% discount code for readers of GarconJon.com. If you fancy a go use 'GCJ4566' at checkout.

P.s. If anyone fancies getting me a holiday gift, this Oliver Sweeney shoe care kit would do nicely.

The Return of 100 Beards

After searching the streets of London for bearded men over 100 consecutive days last year, my #100Beards project seemed to take a life of it's own. 16 months and 4 exhibitions later and I'm nearly ready to release the new edition of the 100 Beards book. The first edition, a limited run of signed copies, sold out in only 6 weeks so to ease disappointment, I've created a preorder link for the new book at 100Beards.bigcartel.com.

The new book will feature the first 100 fellas, plus another 200 portraits - many of which are unseen and unpublished. Since beginning the project, I've photographed over 250 men with beards and heard over 250 incredible stories about a life with facial hair. More details of the book will be revealed soon, but for now check out 100Beards.tumblr.com for new daily updates from London and beyond.
