River Island Press Trip: Berlin

If you've been following me on Instagram, you'll know that this week River Island invited me to Berlin for a menswear press trip. Alongside some of London's most talented editors du jour, it was a delight from start to finish. Staying at Soho House Berlin, we had four days of cocktails by the rooftop pool, flea market shopping and gallery hopping. I wrote a diary for the River Island Blog,  which you can read in full here.

GarconJon suggests...Brogues & Socks

As a man who appreciates the simple things in life, there's nothing more special than a good pair of shoes. My footwear of choice is nearly always the brogue: it's classic yet has a touch of flair. Of course, since Thom Browne revolutionised mens trouser lengths, the sock has become as important as the shoe and for me, a coloured pair is the only way to go. Over the last month, I've acquired quite a few new foot accessories, so here I give my favourites a test run.

GarconJon meets...Richard Haines

 photo richardhainesIMG_3575logobanner.jpg

When I think of Richard Haines, the expression 'man amongst men' springs to mind. I Googled this to ensure my understanding of the expression was correct and Yahoo Answers confirmed 'one who has integrity, a very rare man'. Spot on.

I've been following his blog What I saw Today, illustrations of men around NYC, for about 3 years now but only met the man himself last month in Milan. Sitting around a table with Aaron from Individualism, Michael from Mr Porter and fashion writer Issac from Issac Likes, I was informed that "Richard will be joining us." Before his arrival, Issac (who also did a great interview with Mr Haines for Style.com) asked if knew him - "he's an amazing illustrator" - he told me. Somehow, I instantly knew which Richard he was referring to.

Haines' illustrations are simple yet complex. They're stirring and evocative. To me, they do more than just create a representation of clothing. With a career path that's been anything but straight, I had some burning questions to ask about his history, inspirations and life.

Mr Porter Interview: "My Favourite Photo on the Street"

Last month videographer-extraordinaire Mr Aaron Christian, the man behind Mr Porter's film-camera, asked me about my "Mona Lisa" moment in street photography. See my response at 3:50, an image of Richie Culver taken from the 100 Beards Project, along with some of my contemporaries.

Tortoiseshell Sunglasses: Via Senato, Milan

 photo milanstreetstylesunglassesgarconjon.jpg

For me, tortoiseshell sunglasses are one of those classic items that every gent should own. Summer and again I've enjoyed mine and with each passing year I keep getting compliments on their simplicity and shape. While polarised colour lenses and contrast acetate may be on-trend this season (certainly in Milan, see above), I prefer the more timeless look favoured by the likes of Oliver Peoples or Culter & Gross.

In the hunt for an update, I've found four I'm particularly fond of on MrPorter.com. Thoughts?

GarconJon meets...Daniel Peters

 photo danielIMG_9305slogo.jpg

Daniel Peters is the man behind Best of British - the menswear store currently making waves with a pop-up store in Covent Garden. Having attended the Brit School of Performing Arts and a background working with brands like Burberry, he's got a true creative mind that is merged perfectly with industry. This week I stopped into his latest pop-up on Earlham Street to check out his wares, have a chat about B.o.B. and interview him for a new series 'GarconJon meets...'.

London is made up of cultures from across the globe so I love asking where people are from. Your accent is decidedly English so I'm guessing you may be one of the rare London-born Londoners. Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

You're right! I'm a Peckham boy born and raised, and still living in the hood.

How did BOB all start?

Mainly to support British menswear. I saw a gap in the market and thought 'why not step up with my retail and fashion knowledge to showcase some of the products that I love.' There are many designers on the outskirts and I wanted to bring them to a central London audience, pairing what I'd learnt in my previous roles and bringing these skills to the menswear field. From what started out as an idea to open a pop up in September 2012 has moved on to become a real business. I couldn't be happier with my choice to specialise in British menswear.

Maxime: Avenue du Général Eisenhower, Paris

 photo garconjonIMG_8396as.jpg

Maxime Tormen is a French blogger and student in Paris. His site Neoretro mainly covers street style in it's most authentic form - a documentation of style on the street. Despite the language barrier (my French was a little rusty), we had some superb conversations over Paris Fashion Week and each day he surprised me with a new look. On the final day, he wore what can only be described as barbershop-chic - what a dude.

Pretty Broken Punks - PORT Magazine

 photo MartinIMG_2576s.jpg

Last month, I photographed author Martin Belk on his travels around New York City for PORT Magazine. We visited locations around Manhattan - the Lower East Side, the Village & Midtown - to retrace the writers steps in his new book Pretty Broken Punks, a memoir of his time in NYC. Having read the book, it was fascinating to see the clubs, stores & diners I'd devoured only weeks before in word format.

Check out PORT-Magazine.com to see his interview with Nick Rainsford with my corresponding photography. You can order a copy of Pretty Broken Punks here - it's gritty, it's real, it's exciting, it's the best book I've read in about 5 years.

Justin O'Shea: Rue Jacob, Paris

 photo garconjonjustinosheastreetstyleIMG_6201as.jpg

Since it's inception, I've wanted to include Justin O'Shea in my 100 Beards project. As I've already photographed some of fashions best beards (Bruce Pask, Patrick Grant, Ricki Hall), it makes sense to have one of it's most photographed.

Last week between menswear shows I spotting Mr O'Shea striding down a Parisian street on the Left Bank. He may have been a few blocks away but I was determined to catch him. A short run & a few near car accidents later, I caught up with him. With only 5 frames I got the shot. This image shows his style - all black, all fitted, monk straps - go to 100Beards.tumblr.com

Dapper Lou: Palais de Tokyo, Paris

 photo garconjondapperlouparisstreetstyleIMG_4748as.jpg

For me, shooting street style is 25% about the clothes, 25% about the environment and 50% about the person. To me, Louge Delcy of DapperLou.com is truly testament to this. Whether he's photographed in a dandy 3-piece or NYC sportswear, his personality and charm always shines through. I thoroughly enjoyed our chats this season throughout the fashion weeks in England, Italy & France, particularly the revelation that he lives a block from where I did in New York. One of life's quirks.

Check out Dapper Lou's favourite image in the Mr Porter fashion week video here. Photographed for Mr Porter.

This season's London Collections came to a sartorial close with a Mr Porter event. Set in the serene In & Out Club garden, the event showcased the work of three of London's most exciting menswear design teams: Agi & Sam, Christopher Raeburn & J.W.Anderson. Photographing the occasion surrounded by hanging ivy, fresh summer cocktails & superb conversation, it was the perfect end to a high-octane week. Scroll down for the Mr Porter video featuring my photography.
